How fast do electric scooters go?
Measured top speeds in our registry run from 17.4 mph to 73.5 mph. Here is what each band is actually for, and why the top number is the least useful one on the spec sheet.

The short answer
Most adult commuter scooters measure between 17 and 28 mph. Performance models reach 30-40 mph, and hyperscooters measure 50-73 mph. But top speed is rarely sustained: it is measured on a full battery with a light rider on flat ground, and it drops with charge state, rider weight and gradient.
The speed bands
Every figure below is an independently measured top speed from our registry.
- 17-20 mph — budget and ultralight commuters. NIU KQi 100F (17.4), Segway Ninebot E3 Pro (19.3), GoTrax G4 (20.0), NIU KQi Air (20.1). Entirely adequate for bike lanes and shared paths.
- 20-25 mph — the mainstream commuter band. NAVEE GT3 Pro (20.6), INMOTION Climber (23.4), NIU KQi 300X (23.6), VMAX VX2 Pro GT (23.9), Segway ZT3 Pro (24.7), NAVEE ST3 Pro (24.8), VMAX VX4 GT (25.0).
- 25-35 mph — fast commuters and light performance models. Apollo Go (26.7), Segway Ninebot Max G3 (28.0), NAVEE XT5 Pro (31.0), Segway GT3 (31.3), EMOVE Cruiser V2 (32.2), VMAX VX2 Hub (33.5).
- 35-40 mph — performance territory. GoTrax GX3 (37.9), Hiley Tiger T10 Pro (38.7), NAVEE NT5 Ultra X (39.0).
- Above 50 mph — hyperscooters. YUME Raptor 2 (52), Solar Hyperion RST (57.5), Nami Burn-E 2 Max (61.2), Kaabo King GTR (66), RoadRunner RX7 (67.4), EMOVE Roadster (73.5). These are outside any US street-legal scooter definition.
Top speed is not sustained speed
A top-speed figure is measured under favorable conditions: full battery, flat ground, light rider, no wind. Three things reliably reduce it:
- Battery state. Most scooters are slower at 30% charge than at 100%, because motor output scales with available voltage.
- Rider weight. More mass to accelerate and more rolling resistance. The effect on acceleration is larger than on top speed, but both are real.
- Gradient. The strongest models hold a good fraction of their flat-ground speed on a climb; weaker ones do not. See the hill guide.
It is also worth noting that higher speeds consume substantially more battery (Hiboy, Sep 2026). Riding a 30 mph scooter at 30 mph is one of the fastest ways to discover the gap between claimed and real range (Rider Guide, Sep 2026).
What speed you actually need
15-20 mph is enough for bike lanes, shared paths and most urban riding. It is also the band where you are unambiguously legal almost everywhere.
20-25 mph is the useful upgrade: it lets you keep pace with city traffic on a surface street rather than being an obstacle, which is genuinely safer in some conditions.
Above 25 mph, the question stops being about commuting and starts being about whether you have somewhere legal to use it. Our legality guide covers the thresholds.
What speed costs
Range. Higher speeds consume more battery, and the relationship is not linear — air resistance rises steeply.
Brakes. A faster scooter needs better braking hardware, and several fast models in our registry do not publish theirs. The brakes guide sets out what each speed band requires.
Weight. Speed means bigger motors and bigger batteries. Every scooter in our registry above 37 mph weighs more than 72 lb.
Legality. Above about 30 mph you begin running into state definitions, and above 45-50 mph you are certainly outside them.
Consequences. This is the one nobody puts on a spec sheet. A fall at 15 mph and a fall at 40 mph are different events. The safety gear guide is the honest companion to this page.
Frequently asked questions
▸How fast do electric scooters go on average?
Mainstream adult commuters measure between 17 and 28 mph. Performance models reach 30-40 mph, and hyperscooters measure above 50 mph, which is outside US street-legal scooter definitions.
▸Why is my scooter slower than advertised?
Top speed is measured with a full battery, a light rider, flat ground and no wind. Battery state, rider weight and gradient all reduce it in normal use.
▸Is 20 mph fast enough?
For bike lanes and shared paths, comfortably. 20-25 mph is the useful upgrade for keeping pace with city traffic. Above 25 mph the question becomes whether you have somewhere legal to ride it.
▸Does speed affect range?
Substantially. Higher speeds consume more battery, and air resistance rises steeply, so riding near the top speed is the quickest way to fall short of any range figure.
