The best electric scooters for 12-year-olds
Twelve is below the minimum age most adult scooters state and well below what pediatric guidance recommends. If you are buying anyway, these are the models built for it.

The short answer
Only one model here states 12 as its minimum age: the Hiboy S2 Lite, capped at 13 mph and UL 2272 certified (Hiboy, Sep 2026). Two more are rated 8-14 and 8-12. Before any of that, know that eRideHero cites American Academy of Pediatrics guidance that children under 16 should not ride electric scooters at all (eRideHero, Sep 2026), and that some US jurisdictions set a legal minimum age.
The honest answer first
We are not going to pretend this is a straightforward purchase. Three things are true at once, and a page that hides any of them is not doing its job.
Pediatric guidance says no. The under-16 recommendation cited by eRideHero (eRideHero, Sep 2026) is more conservative than the entire market. You should weigh it.
The industry’s own floor is 8, with conditions. eRideHero’s position is that 8 is a realistic minimum for a speed-limited kids’ scooter, and only if the child can already ride a bicycle confidently and has spent time on a regular kick scooter first (eRideHero, Sep 2026). Those conditions are doing a lot of work in that sentence.
Adult scooters are not an option at 12. Every adult model on this site states 14 or 16 as its minimum. A 12-year-old who meets a 265 lb payload rating is still outside the maker’s intended use, and the braking hardware is specified for an adult at adult speeds.

What actually matters at this age
Payload, not age, is usually the binding constraint
The Segway C2 Pro and C2 Lite are both rated 110 lb (eRideHero, Sep 2026). The average 12-year-old is close to or above that, which quietly rules both out for many buyers regardless of their stated age band. The Hiboy S2 Lite’s 180 lb and the two 132 lb models give more room. Check this number before anything else.
App speed limiting is the feature to pay for
The NAVEE K100 Max offers speed limits, mode locking and ride history through its app, plus GPS tracking via Apple Find My (eRideHero, Sep 2026). Being able to cap the scooter at walking pace for the first month, then raise it, is worth more than any spec on the sheet. The GoTrax Comet has no parental control at all, which is the main reason it sits fourth here despite decent hardware.
UL 2272, without exception
The battery will be charged inside your house. The Segway C2 Lite and Hiboy S2 Lite are the models on this page listed as UL 2272 certified (eRideHero, Sep 2026) (Hiboy, Sep 2026). The charging guidance is worth following too: be present while charging, avoid charging overnight, and use only the manufacturer’s charger (Hiboy, Sep 2026).
Helmet, pads, and a bicycle first
eRideHero is unambiguous: always wear a helmet, no exceptions, with knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards recommended for beginners (eRideHero, Sep 2026). Their readiness test — confident on a bicycle, time spent on a kick scooter — is a better gate than age alone.
Range does not matter here
These models measure between 4.2 and 8.4 miles (eRideHero, Sep 2026), and that is fine. A 12-year-old is riding a street, a park path or a cul-de-sac, not a commute. Do not pay for range at this age; pay for control and certification.
