Electric scooter weight and fold size
The most under-weighted spec in the category. A scooter you cannot carry up your stairs is a scooter that stops getting used in about three weeks.

The short answer
Under 30 lb you can carry a scooter one-handed up stairs. Between 30 and 45 lb it is a short two-hand lift. Between 45 and 60 lb you roll it and lift only over curbs. Over 60 lb it is a vehicle you park. Decide which band your life needs before you look at any other spec.
The weight thresholds
Weight matters more than any other spec for one reason: it is the only one that imposes a cost on you every single time you finish a ride. Range only matters on the days you run low. Top speed only matters where you can use it. Weight matters at every doorway.
The bands are not arbitrary. They correspond to what an average adult can do with an awkward object that has no good handle:
- Under 30 lb — one-handed, up a flight, through a turnstile. Only the NIU KQi Air (26.4 lb measured) sits here in our registry (eRideHero, Sep 2026).
- 30-45 lb — both hands, one flight, brief. The GoTrax G4 (37.4 lb), NIU KQi 100F (38.8 lb) and Segway E3 Pro (40.1 lb).
- 45-60 lb — into a car boot with effort; not up stairs regularly. Most good commuters live here.
- Over 60 lb — a parked vehicle. Long-range and heavy-rider scooters.
Fold size is not folded length
Manufacturers publish folded dimensions, and those dimensions are usually accurate and usually not the thing that matters. What matters is:
- Whether the handlebars fold too. A scooter whose stem folds but whose bars stay wide is still a meter across, which is what actually blocks a doorway or a train aisle.
- Whether it stands up folded. Some scooters stay upright when folded and some have to lie down. Lying down is what turns a scooter into a trip hazard in a hallway.
- Where the balance point is. A scooter you can lift by the stem in one motion feels lighter than one that has to be gripped by the deck, even at the same weight.
What we do not know
Range per pound
A useful way to see which scooters are efficiently light rather than just under-batteried. Both inputs are independently measured; the division is ours.
- NIU KQi Air — 24.2 mi / 26.4 lb = 0.92
- VMAX VX2 Pro GT — 39.6 / 45.6 = 0.87
- VMAX VX4 GT — 42.5 / 63.9 = 0.67
- VMAX VX2 Hub — 35.6 / 57.1 = 0.62
- EMOVE Cruiser V2 — 46.3 / 74 = 0.63
- NIU KQi 300X — 26.8 / 48.7 = 0.55
- Segway Ninebot Max G3 — 24.9 / 54.2 = 0.46
- Segway ZT3 Pro — 22.7 / 65.5 = 0.35
The spread is nearly three to one. Two scooters — the KQi Air and the VX2 Pro GT — are doing something the rest are not, and that efficiency is exactly what a premium in this category is supposed to buy.
How to decide
- Walk your actual route and count the stairs, curbs and doorways.
- Pick your weight band from the list above. This is a hard constraint, not a preference.
- Within that band, take the model with the highest measured range — the lightweight round-up is ordered that way.
- Only then look at speed, and remember that more speed costs weight. Every extra measured mile costs weight too, as the range study makes clear.
Frequently asked questions
▸How much does an electric scooter weigh?
Commuter models in our registry run from 26.4 lb to 65.5 lb as measured. Long-range and heavy-rider models go past 100 lb. Under 30 lb is exceptional; 45-55 lb is typical for a good commuter.
▸What is a good weight for a folding electric scooter?
Under 40 lb if you have to carry it regularly; under 30 lb if you take it up stairs or onto public transport. Above 45 lb, plan to roll it rather than lift it.
▸Do folded dimensions matter as much as weight?
Less than you would think. Folded length is usually fine; what blocks a doorway is handlebar width, and whether the scooter stands up folded decides whether it is a hazard in a hallway. Neither is reliably published.
